More About Our Mission“You can do it, we can help”. Home Depot’s advertising slogan also applies to how we feel about helping children follow Jesus at Atonement. Our desire is to walk alongside parents in the promises made in baptism. At baptism, children are brought into God’s family with parents promising to nurture and strengthen a relationship to God as their child grows up.
In Deuteronomy 6, Moses declares to the entire nation of Israel:
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up . . .” Deut. 6:4-7
When a child is born until they graduate from high school, there are 940 weeks/weekends to impress and talk about these commandments. When they enter kindergarten, 637 remain. By the time they reach 3rd grade, 468 weekends are left. At the end of elementary school and 6th grade, only 302 and so on and so on. It happens fast. We want to partner with you to help your child discover and embrace a growing relationship with Jesus Christ by showing them that they belong to God’s family, the Bible is the source of wisdom and truth and living in healthy relationships with one another matters.
Most kids form their entire idea of who God is and choose whether or not they’ll have a relationship with him before the time they enter middle school. This is why children’s spiritual life is so important to us. And why partnering with parents is at the heart of what we are about; because as a church, we have less than 940 hours to spend with your child in developing that relationship with God. As a parent, you have a little more time, but it’s moving fast.
